problem in charset in xampp 1.8.1

I'm using XAMPP for Windows 1.8.1, and when I try to search data from mysql-database with PHP, the database tables records in fields where there are just one scandinavian letter, the content of field will not be printed at all. What I have to do in order to get all the charset settings in order?
