xampp 1.8.1 Windows 7 (administrator rights)

I installed xampp 1.8.1 on Windows 7 Pro 32-bit OS laptop and a UAC controls warning pop up regarding administrator rights affecting some of the services in xampp while it was installing xampp. I am login as Owner administrator on my computer and my xampp control panel doesn't look anything like what's shown on phpacademy YT tutorial. Has anybody else encounter this problem? If so how do I fix the problem? So I can get xampp 1.8.1 installed and have it working and running correctly. Because the Xampp control panel shows red x's underneath Module services. I have gone into advance settings under Tools in Skype and unchecked the box for Port 80 and Port 443 open connection settings.

Thats a normal warning. For the installation process itself it shouldn't affect anything.

To be sure that everything is functional in the control panel, you should start the control panel with rightclick->run asAdministrator, even if you are logged in with an administrator account in windows. Otherwise the Windows User Account Control (UAC) prevent to do some actions (like starting/stopping/registering windows services) even if you are administrator.

The XAMPP control panel was completely redesigned by two forum members not long ago.

Because the Xampp control panel shows red x's underneath Module services.

Thats absolutely okay. The red crosses or green ticks are just the registering state of the windows services for each module. You don't need them really to use XAMPP, exept you want to start a module right after windows start.

Thats good. Now restart your XAMPP control panel (like described above) and post us the full contents of its status messages (textfield at the bottom of the XAMPP control panel)

Does this mean everything is running ok? I'm still seeing the red X's once I click run under Actions in the XAMPP Control panel. Will everything start functioning properly in XAMPP Control panel? Do I need to install anything else to start writing PHP in Notepad++?

That is looking good But nothing is running at this time exept the control panel itself. You need to hit the Start Buttons of the components you wish to start (most common Apache and MySQL).

As said before, the red crosses are not important for the functionallity of the components. Just hit the Start Buttons and leave the red crosses as they are.

Do I need to install anything else to start writing PHP in Notepad++?

That depends on your own needs. To code PHP you even don't need Notepad++, the Windows Notepad can do that too. But is much more comfortable to use a code editor like Notepad++ instead of that basic text editor.
