phpadmin problem

I am running Xampp 1.8.1 on Windows Server 2008 R2 SP 2 and when I go into phpadmin I get the following and do not know how to fix this:
Connection for controluser as defined in your configuration failed.
SELECT `tables`
FROM `phpmyadmin`.`pma_recent`
WHERE `username` = 'root'
MySQL said: Documentation
#1146 - Table 'phpmyadmin.pma_recent' doesn't exist
Connection for controluser as defined in your configuration failed.

Can someone please assist with this.

I did not upgrade the server is new, so I went to Apache Friends and downloaded the lastest version. I did not install this on the C; drive I have it on the E: drive. I never put it on the boot drive, if anything happens I do not lose what I am developing.
