MySQL started, but not connected [Answered]

Hi all,

Thanks for all your valuable input. It was indeed my hosts file.
Due to certain applications requiring validation in the cloud it was necessary to add 127.0.0.1 when certains domains were asked for.
the localhosts got tangled up in this, so resetting it back to 127.0.0.1 localhost worked a treat.
